To the non-writer, this title may seem cryptic. What is NaNoWriMo you may ask? It is National Novel Writing Month. Once a year, writers all over the world get together and focus on writing 50,000 words in the month of November.
This is my first year to participate in the madness. When I decided to sign up, I thought, hmmm. I type about 50 words per minute easily. So how long would it take to type 50,000 words? Approximately 16.66666 hours. Well, that doesn’t sound too hard.
But writing a book isn’t exactly like typing a letter, or transcribing dictation. Nobody is there telling you what to write. You have to come up with an idea, a plot…and then you have to sit down and write it.
I’m sure many writer blogs will feature NaNoWriMo this month. I’ll try to remember to post so that you can keep up with my progress. We’re on day three and I’m on schedule.
So now I can go out to play on this beautiful November afternoon.

I’m entering NaNo this year as well — on my terms, rather than theirs. I figure after 6 years or so I get some wiggle room. (And I’m embarrassed to say that my present WIP was my NaNo 2 years ago.) Having had a far too interesting medical/surgical life since then, I’m sticking a toe in this year gingerly. Taking the word count as I go through the MS, which if I stick to it will be OUTSTANDING, I am issuing a caveat to all and sundry: they aren’t entirely new words. It’s revision, and cutting to boot, so sometimes the word count will be pathetic and sometimes not.

I’m doing NaNo with a new story. Going well so far. But they always start out easily enough. I may be singing a different tune in a week or two! Good luck, Selena and Beppie!!
